Nose
Rich, with red-skinned fruits like currants and plum, tropical notes of banana, pineapple, guava, mango, and peach. There's a definite, gentle smoke, often described as campfire-style or earthy, along with vanilla, brown sugar, and malty undertones. Hints of citrus, orange zest, almond biscotti, and sometimes a touch of oak or molasses are also present.
Palate
Powerful yet controlled, it brings forth red fruits, citrus (especially orange), caramel, and vanilla. Rye baking spices, ginger, and black pepper add a zingy layer. A gentle, dry peat is present, often accompanied by notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and sometimes earthy black truffle. The mouthfeel is often described as oily or silky, with a good substantial weight.
Finish
Long and evolving, characterized by lingering orange and berry sweetness, sometimes with artificial sweetness like banana candies. Dry peat and oak provide structure, while molasses-like sweetness and rising spices carry through. Notes of burnt sugar, roasted malt, stout beer, Dutch cocoa powder, and mild peat are also common.
