Description

Since its establishment in 1815, The Ardbeg distillery has been on a tumultuous rollercoaster ride of ownership changes, closures, and reopening. Stability was only achieved relatively recently, when the ailing distillery was purchased in 1997 by industry giants, Glenmorangie. The subsequent years have seen the distillery's popularity swell, with fans enticed by the signature style of tarry, sooty ... This 1978 vintage was one of the first vintage releases by Glenmorangie after they bought the distillery in 1997. It was distilled a year after Ardbeg had completely closed their on-site maltings and just one year before Hiram Walker bought 100% of the shares in the company.

Nose
Robust peat smoke with hints of sea salt, citrus zest, and vanilla. Delicate peat, grapefruit, moss, saline, Amaretto, pineapple, guava, hay, and old tractors rusting in fields. Peat and tar, petrol, smoked meat, and pear notes. Dry coconut shreds and pineapple overseeing gentle amber smoke, lemon zest, salt and pepper, vanilla oil, a touch of tar, citrus spice, leather, wood incense, and mineral notes.
Palate
Full-bodied with intense peat smoke, rich caramel, dark chocolate, and a touch of espresso. Smokier, peppercorns, citrus peels, sea salt, very dark chocolate, and sweet tobacco. Rich, smoky and meaty. Limoncello, creamy Kahlua, grilled pineapple, stewed fruits, chocolate oak, fuzzy floral touches, coal fire, tar, soft peppermint heat, vanilla cream, grapefruits, ashes, hazelnut chocolate, and sooty notes.
Finish
Long and smoky, with warming spices, black pepper, and a hint of medicinal iodine. Smoke and pepper, hints of sugar, soot and engine exhaust. Extremely long finish. Waxy fruits simmering, another bite of chocolate oak, and a pleasant finish.
