Description

The 2018 limited edition release from Ardbeg, Ardbeg Grooves was released in celebration of Ardbeg Day 2018. This intensely mellow dram was matured in heavily-charred ex-wine casks, which created deep grooves in the wood, hence the name, allowing for increased contact between the whisky and the oak. Ardbeg is a distillery located on the south coast of the Isle of Islay, part of the Scotch whisky holdings of LVMH. Despite being closed twice in the latter 20th century, the distillery's heavily-peated single malt has always been highly-regarded.

Nose
Intense aromas of smoked cinnamon and paprika, antique leather and saddle soap, with classic Ardbeg scents of pine resin, tar and briny sea spray. Distant hint of a fragrant bonfire, chilli-seasoned meats, lavender scented soap, ground white pepper, floral and herbal notes, coriander leaves and mint.
Palate
A powerfully salty mouthfeel, sweet treacle toffee, vanilla popcorn, salted fruits (peaches), soot and tar. Smoky BBQ, paprika and mustard spice, smoked pears and apples. Red wine influence, sweet, oily mouthfeel, pears, candy apples, red hot cinnamon candy, vanilla. Earthy peat, wood smoke, oak spice, pepper, sweet lemon, tar.
Finish
Smoked paprika and bonfires with a mellow sweetness. Long, dry, and sweet. Toffee, earthy peat/smoke, candy apples, red hot cinnamon candy, vanilla, ripe stone fruit (peach, plum). Ash, sweet fruity layer, briny. Long and complex with smoky oak, sweet vanilla, spicy fruit notes.
