Description

This highly sought-after 'Guaranteed' age statement release was bottled in 1996, making it one of the last Ardbeg bottlings produced by Allied Distillers before the distillery's sale to Glenmorangie in 1997. Matured for at least 30 years, this release was limited to only 29 casks and presented in an original wooden box. It is described as a 'Very Old' Ardbeg, a big whisky among the smokiest of Islay Malts, with a pungent impact on the nose and palate, and a heavy tarred rope aroma with a hint of heather sweetness.

Nose
Very elegant, the peat smoke is deep and pleasant, age has smoothed all edges. A pleasant sweetness comes up, raspberry jam hits me first, then some grenadine and black tea with honey. There is a light tobacco note, some cigar smoke and oiled oak.
Palate
Green tea and a hint of peppermint, peat smoke. Then, quite distantly, lemon juice, leather and sweet pipe tobacco, dried berries, kitchen herbs and wood sugar.
Finish
Very long, very pleasant, slightly smoked ham with herb honey marinade, cloves and rosemary.
