Description

Ardbeg Heavy Vapours is a limited edition single malt whisky released for Ardbeg Day and Fèis Ìle 2023. It is notable for being distilled without the purifier on the still, an experiment by Dr. Bill Lumsden to allow heavier vapours to rise, disrupting Ardbeg's usual balance of peat and floral fruitiness. This results in untamed, darker flavours and notes. It is non-chill filtered and matured in ex-bourbon casks.

Nose
Intense, pungent, and aromatic with deep earthy and fragrant peat, smoky sweet aromas, creosote or tarry rope, sea shells, vanilla, mezcal, iodine, and a vegetal note. Some also detect lime peel, roasted cacao nib, and rock pools.
Palate
A burst of bittersweetness with thick ashy smoke, charcoal, pepper, aniseed, dark chocolate, cardamom, peppermint, coffee grits, and a creamy mouthfeel. Flavors of toasted oak, black pepper, and dried fruit are also noted, with some finding it flat or young.
Finish
Long and bold, with lingering peat smoke, tar, ash, chocolate, herbal notes, sweet liquorice, and a slightly metallic note. Some mention camp-fire smoke, salted dark chocolate, and peppered sea-spray.
