Nose
Deep dark meaty peat, imbued with a fat richness. Biltong, smoked oysters, smoked brisket, and grilled poblanos. Underneath the peat is dark sweetness – stewed fruit, dry red wine, dark chocolate, and some caramel corn. A bouquet garnis of herbs, a hint of licorice, and some black sesame seeds. Both black and red pepper.
Palate
Medium-thick silky texture. Arrives with earthy dark chocolate, coffee, and rich lapsang souchong. Earthy and coastal peat dominates as it develops, bringing charred driftwood and dunnage warehouse. More dry wine here, slightly tart. As the peat lifts, it gets nutty and almost creamy. My jot-notes for this whisky include the phrase “caramel corn from hell”.
Finish
Very long, earthy and toasty. Chocolate-covered cherries and fresh-roasted coffee beans. A little briny, with savoury seaweed and smoked seafood. Nutty, almost like a sharp aged cheddar.
