Nose
Introducing itself with a balanced blast of smoke, brine, and sweet oak spice; subtle tones of fragrant tobacco, orange barley sugar and touches of apricot and seaweed behind the peat reek. Burnt fruitcake earthy peat smoke, cherry jam, shrivelled raisins and thick date sweetness. Notes of spiced pastry and Eccles cakes build, alongside brown sugar, cold cast-iron stoves and coal dust. Cherry menthol freshness develops with a touch of briny sea breeze. Unexpectedly rich with strong notes of pineapple and white chocolate.
Palate
A big but elegant whisky: zesty oak spice, bonfire embers and a waxy mouthfeel combine with hints of sweet vanilla, white pepper and a little whiff of oriental smoke. Mint and menthol lead a charge into rich fruitcake and dark earthiness. The smoke has a medicinal edge as well as a touch of smoked ham and woody bonfires. Freshness builds, with smouldering mintyness floating on top: mint choc chip, mint fondant, and smouldering mint and pine leaves. Sweet cherry bubble-gum notes build. After the initial burst of peat smoke this dram opens up into a heady combination of chocolate and Christmas spices.
Finish
Long and elegant with a youthful fiery spirit kick; the lingering well-knit structure comes through in abundance to give spice, capsicum and more than a little coastal nod that leaves you in no two minds of its island origins. Mint fondant and cherry bubble-gum fade slowly, joined by wood smoke and dark liquorice. A very long finish that changes drastically throughout. Opening with a robust hit of classic Islay peat but eventually giving way to rich combination of vanilla and nutmeg.
