Description

This sherry-cask-matured expression comes courtesy of the Warenghem distillery in Brittany, France. Family-owned for more than a century, it came to produce the country's first whiskies in the early eighties. The Oloroso cask maturation lends this whisky an exceptional complex sweetness. It is distilled and matured in Brittany, France, non-chill filtered and has natural color. An intense and generous whisky, combining the richness of Breton and Spanish terroirs. Made from organically grown French barley and distilled in traditional pot stills, it illustrates the desire to create an exceptional single malt that reflects the Breton character: a rich, fruity whisky that is more respectful of the environment.

Maltiply Tasting Profile
Nose
Elegant and rich influenced by the Oloroso sherry rich aromas with vanilla, lemon and a touch of mint. Very fruity, with figs, prunes, and red fruits, but not very expressive. Intense nose of dried dates, figs, sultanas, caramel, maple syrup, cooked apples, cinnamon.
Palate
Nicely balanced and rounded with caramel sweets and sherry. The first hit is spicy, with cinnamon and a slight touch of ginger. Notes of dried fruits appear mid-palate and it evolves towards the bitterness of dark chocolate. Balanced and rich flavors.
Finish
Warming with a hint of pepper. Medium long, the finish is slightly drying, on peppered chocolate. Moderately long and dry, with a hint of saltiness on the cinnamon, liquorice and wood. Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Spicy and longlasting, pepper and a hint of cinnamon.

A warming, peppery finish with chocolate and a dry edge sounds appealing, and it is described as lasting from medium-long to long. The nose is rich but also called not very expressive, so this seems more rounded than showy.

The spicy first note against caramel and dried fruit gives this Armorik a pleasing balance. I like that the cinnamon and ginger are followed by dark chocolate, with pepper carrying through the finish.

Nose: Vanilla, lemon and a touch of mint, Figs, prunes and red fruits, Dried dates, sultanas and caramelPalate: Caramel sweets and sherry, Cinnamon with a slight touch of ginger, Dried fruits moving toward dark chocolateFinish: Pepper with chocolate, Cinnamon, liquorice and wood, A hint of saltiness

The first hit of cinnamon and slight ginger gives the sherry sweetness some lift, rather than letting caramel and dried fruit sit on their own. The palate then moves toward dark chocolate, while the finish keeps pepper alongside a little dryness and salt. That shift from sweet fruit to bitter chocolate and pepper is the part I find most interesting: it sounds rounded without losing its spice.

Nose: Vanilla, lemon and a touch of mint, Figs, dried dates and red fruits, Cinnamon, caramel and maple syrupPalate: Caramel sweets and sherry, Cinnamon and a slight touch of ginger, Dried fruits developing toward dark chocolateFinish: Warming pepper and peppered chocolate, Slightly drying, with a hint of saltiness, Cinnamon, liquorice and wood
