Description

The Arran Smugglers' Series - Volume One 'The Illicit Stills' is the inaugural release in a trilogy from the Isle of Arran Distillers, paying homage to the island's rich history of illicit distillation during the 18th and 19th centuries. This limited edition of 8,700 bottles worldwide is a unique blend of un-peated, medium-peated, and heavily-peated Arran Malt, with some heavily peated at 50 ppm. It was matured in a combination of Bourbon barrels and Port Pipes, and is bottled at a natural cask strength of 56.4% ABV. The whisky is non-chill filtered and has no artificial coloring. It comes presented in a distinctive book-shaped box.

Nose
Soft and rich, with clear but not overwhelming peat. Vanilla, nuts, sweet licorice, hints of soft fruitiness (plums, sweet oranges, dried fruits, strawberry yogurt), lemon zest, lime, butter, apricots, floral notes (honeysuckle, spring flowers), coastal elements, light BBQ embers, and a slight dustiness.
Palate
Super soft and slightly oily mouthfeel. Spicy attack (white pepper, ginger, chili peppers), wood smoke, gripping tannin, white grapes, pink wafer biscuits, dark ripe fruits, leather, vanilla fudge, and a savory note. Peat warmth builds up, with notes of Sherried plums and apple. Some canned peaches.
Finish
Long and full, with plenty of smoke and wood fire ash. Pepper and ginger, aniseed, dark caramel, slightly burnt apples, dried apricots, salty, maritime notes, and a lingering smokiness. Dry and spicy with well-integrated oaky dryness.
