Description

Aultmore of the Foggie Moss 25 Years Old Speyside single malt was bottled as part of Dewar's Last Great Malts range, which was launched in 2014. Named after a secluded site that was once known for smugglers and illicit stills, the Foggie Moss conceals the water's source and filters it through gorse and heather, leaving a purified and refined character. This smaller 50cl bottle was launched as a Travel Retail Exclusive. This is batch number 2, presented with natural colour and non-chill filtered.

Palate: Oily, roasted malt, oranges, toasted nuts, marmalade, dark chocolate, burnt biscuits, old wood mustiness, vanilla, ginger, pepper, sweet oak, orchard fruits, dried raisins and apricots, creamy mouthfeel, cinnamon, nutmeg, luscious tropical fruit, honey, sawdusty oak, crumbly fudge, buttered bread, plum, leather.

The ripe fruit and caramel give this Aultmore a rounded direction, while the oak, ginger and dark chocolate add depth. The long, citrus-and-spice finish is the part that most appeals to me.

The unpeated designation is useful context, but it doesn’t by itself settle the whisky’s perceived smoke intensity. The described character is much more clearly led by ripe fruit, caramel and oak, with roasted malt, dark chocolate and spice adding depth on the palate. I find that contrast more compelling than treating smoke as the headline. The long finish brings the oak and sweet spices back alongside citrus and honey, giving this 25-year-old sherry-cask single malt a coherent, layered shape.
