Description

The Balvenie 17 Year Old Islay Cask is a distinctive and innovative expression from The Balvenie Distillery, bringing together the smooth, honeyed character of The Balvenie's Speyside malt with the bold, smoky influence of Islay whisky. This limited-edition release is aged for 17 years in traditional oak casks before being finished in casks that previously held peated whisky from the Islay region, which imparts a unique smoky and maritime character to the whisky.

Nose
The nose opens with the signature honeyed sweetness of The Balvenie, complemented by soft vanilla and malted barley. The Islay cask influence becomes apparent with smoky peat and gentle brine, along with hints of seaweed and maritime aromas. There is also a touch of citrus—lemon zest and orange peel—that adds brightness to the mix, along with light floral notes and a hint of oak.
Palate
On the palate, the whisky is smooth and well-rounded, with a delicate balance between sweetness and smokiness. The honeyed malt base is enriched by layers of toffee and caramel, while the peaty notes from the Islay cask add depth and a touch of saltiness. Flavors of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and a gentle spice from the oak round out the experience, creating a harmonious profile.
Finish
The finish is long and satisfying, with the smokiness lingering on the palate, alongside hints of sea salt, malt, and honey. The warmth from the oak adds a slight dryness, which balances the sweetness of the malt.
