Description

Situated at the base of, and named after Britain's tallest mountain, Ben Nevis was founded by 'Long' John McDonald and stayed in the McDonald family until the 1940s. It was then that Joseph Hobbs took over the distillery and revamped production by installing a Coffey still allowing them to experiment in both grain and malt whiskies. The distillery was bought by Nikka in 1989 and about three-quarters of its output goes into blends, including Japanese blended whisky. The Ben Nevis 10 Year Old is a full-bodied Highland single malt, known for its distinctive character, often described as old-style with tropical fruit, malt, and a hint of peat.

Nose
Immediately rich and multilayered, with sherry notes like hazelnut, raisins, dates, and a hint of cold coffee, alongside a slightly funky, waxy, and mineral character. Sweet apple juice, light honey, pear, red delicious apple, honeydew melon, and apricot are also present, with buttery caramel notes. Floral, fragrant, honey, citrus fruits of orange and beeswax with elements of toffee and vanilla aromas.
Palate
Intensely malty and sherried, with malted barley grist, malted cereal, chocolate orange, a hint of coffee, vanilla, and toffee. Light caramel and apple, with toffee notes, lemon and orange zest, sweetened anise, mild smoke, and a musty paper note. Initial spicy notes lead to cereal flavours and smooth creaminess of dark chocolate. Full-bodied with tropical fruit, coffee, roasted nuts, and dark chocolate.
Finish
Intense and long, with enduring natural vanilla and cereal notes. Apple juice and light caramel continue, with some bitterness like coffee or dark chocolate. Silken, toffee and caramel notes balanced with a touch of mochaccino and dark chocolate. Medium length, fatty, waxy, and lemony, with a malty character.
