Description

This Ben Nevis 1996 22 Year Old was released at The Whisky Show 2019 as part of The Whisky Exchange's Magic of the Cask series. It spent 22 years in a single refill sherry butt before being bottled in 2019. The distillery, situated at the base of Britain's tallest mountain, was founded by 'Long' John McDonald and later acquired by Nikka in 1989. This limited edition bottling yielded 519 bottles.

Nose
Aromas of cherries, sultanas and raisins, alongside sherry-soaked fruit cake and a gentle, earthy backdrop. Leafiness, mosses, industrial notes of pan oils and axle grease, with a savouriness like eggy bread dusted with icing sugar. Bright fruitiness with strawberry laces and fondants served with chocolate petit fours.
Palate
Oily, mouth coating with sweet fruit, dark chocolate, leather, brown sugar and sweet spices. Cherries, blackcurrants, rich chocolate, raisins, cranberries, orange marmalade, and a fruity, booze-laced sponge cake. Spicing with cinnamon, wet wool, burnt soils, and piled autumn leaves.
Finish
Medium to long, offering plenty of chocolate and cinnamon spicing with mentholated oak. Sweet chocolate cake slowly becomes bittersweet, with lingering dried cherries and apples.
