Description

When Rupert Patrick decided to use his great-great grandfather's name, James Eadie in his new venture, he started by looking through old ledgers and tracking down forgotten blends. James Eadie was born near Gleneagles establishing his brewing and bottling business in 1854 and his whisky was known as "an ancient Scotch mixture that was dispensed to a favoured few". Reviving the old blend, Patrick started bottling single cask and small batch single malt whiskies. This Benrinnes 2009 15 Year Old is a single malt from the Speyside distillery, finished for 28 months in a first-fill Bual Madeira Hogshead. The berry jam and fresh cream give this a soft, generous feel, while pepper and the earthy, spicy finish keep it from becoming too sweet. It’s a fruit-led style with enough contrast to hold my interest.

The contrast is appealing: the palate is described as soft, juicy and rounded, with berry jam, pears and Turkish Delight, while the stated 54.5% ABV gives this single malt a notably high strength. The finish brings earthy spice, dried fruit and dark chocolate, keeping sweetness from being the only story. Strawberry, cream and rose water add a delicate edge on the nose. A fruit-led, richly detailed character with enough savoury spice to hold my interest.
