Benromach 2012 Contrasts: Peat Smoke is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, part of Benromach's innovative Contrasts series. Distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2021, this 9-year-old expression is heavily peated to 55 ppm and matured exclusively in first-fill sherry hogsheads. It is bottled at 46% ABV, is natural color, and non-chill filtered. This small batch release offers a unique combination of rich sherry notes and intense peat smoke, showcasing a departure from traditional Speyside profiles.

Nose
Appealing cinnamon and ginger aromas with rich dark chocolate, soft demerara sugar, Seville orange peel, and sweet smoke. Deep, sooty coal dust, echoes of a cold barbecue, sourness of rice vinegar, Italian speck, pimentón de la Vera, burnt heather, engine oil, chipotles, miso, pencil lead, blackberry jam, roasted apricots, toffee coated nuts, and chocolate.
Palate
Cocoa powder and sweet, creamy honeycomb accompany stewed red berries. Subtle vanilla and cracked black pepper lead to toasted almonds. Oily, quite smoky, meaty notes, hint of rubber, brown sugar, dark berries, hints of leather, gravel, charcoal, toffee, chocolate, and grilled pineapple.
Finish
Full finish with Morello cherry, peat smoke, and sweetness. Medium length, really ashy, with some sherry sweetness (toffee, mulled wine), but losing strength quite rapidly. Toffee, green apple, vanilla, and salt.
