Description

The oldest operational distillery on the isle of Islay, built in 1779. Today it is part of the Suntory Group, having been acquired by the Japanese company in 1994. This 18 year old is matured in hand-selected American oak ex-Bourbon casks and European oak Oloroso sherry casks, giving it a complex and exquisitely layered persona. It is a masterful combination of gentle peat smoke with tropical fruits, offering a perfectly balanced malt.

Nose
Pungent, citrus, stewing fruit, hints of damp wood and soft smoke. Light, fragrant smoke like herbs on fire, butterscotch, light menthol, nectarines, brine, ferns, sweet smoke, orange peel, apple, peat, dried fruits, dark chocolate, toffee, vanilla, and a hint of sea salt.
Palate
Spirity at first, then perfume, fruit, plum jam, good sweetness, peat smoke, grapey. Big floral note, prickly middle, sweet syrup, sugared flowers, oily mouthfeel. Orange peel, green apple, dry peppery peat, spices, smoked fruits, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and subtle spices.
Finish
Seville marmalade, blossom, dark peat. Sweet, floral notes, lightly tannic wood, touch of sawdust. Dry, sweetish, peppery. Long and lingering, with a balance of sweet and smoky notes, oak influence, and a touch of maritime character.
