Description

This is an excellent expression of a cask strength, 34-year-old single malt whisky from the highly rated Bowmore distillery. Distilled in 1971 and matured in ex-sherry casks, it was bottled in 2005 as part of an outturn of just 960 bottles. The whisky is part of the distillery's Vintage Distillation series and comes in a rich, dark color, hinting at its spicy, rum-like character.

Nose
Forest-like and herbal, with notes of raisins, marzipan, smoldering bonfire, soft cheese, gingerbread, mulled wine, fruitcake, wine-poached pears, Chinese plum sauce, rosewater, coconut milk, 'arranged' rum, prunes in Armagnac, Havana tobacco, classical peat smoke, seaweed, brine, ginger ale, horse dung, and wet hay.
Palate
Sweet and winy, intensely cocoa-like and bittersweet, very sherry forward with deep and tangier notes of sherry, balanced by oak. Menthol, blackcurrant jam, liquorice, resinous, meaty, fermented fruits, wax, old rancio (Oloroso), and herbs.
Finish
Creamy, cocoa butter-like, Sherry sweet, fantastically long with more oak and sherry, and some sweet cigar smoke towards the very end.
