Description

This is a 20-year-old Islay single malt from Bowmore distillery, independently bottled by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) as cask 3.299. Named 'Sweet smoke on the water', it was distilled in March 1996 and bottled in 2017 as a limited release for the Feis Ile 2017 festival. It was matured for 20 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead and then finished for a few months in a 2nd fill French oak hogshead, resulting in an outturn of 252 bottles at a natural cask strength of 54.2% ABV.

Very salty and maritime with seafood notes, acetone, mango, gentle peat, tropical fruit salad (mango, kiwi, apricot), white pepper, sea salt, limestone, menthol, vanilla, cinnamon, and coal dust. Hints of heather, lavender, and sweet applewood smoke.
Palate
Zephyrlike, mellow and rich with sweet ashes, honey, light fruity notes, spicy pepper and chili, and barbecue notes. A dense flavor profile with gentle peat, tropical fruit trio, green ferns, creosote, limestone, coal dust, white pepper, menthol, cinnamon, and sea salt.
Finish
Long and lingering with spices, strawberry ice-cream, fleeting hints of tropical fruits, peat, cinnamon, sea salt, and oak.
