Description

A single malt distillery on the isle of Islay, currently part of the whisky holdings of French company, Rémy Cointreau. The distillery's flagship brand of single malt is a non-peated style, however it also produces peated variants called Port Charlotte and Octomore, as well as The Botanist gin. This unique occasional bottling, hand-crafted by Master Distiller Jim McEwan, was distilled in 1970 and bottled in 2002, making it a 31-year-old Islay single malt. It was one of the first releases after the distillery's reopening in 2001 under new ownership.

Nose
Rich and full with boiled sweets, toffee, rubbed petals, Bramley apple, bruised pear, peppermint, marmalade, lemon zest, and Limoncello. Also soft sweet fruit notes of ripe pineapple, peach, pear, banana, green apple, fresh flowers, watered gardens, old books, old wood, beeswaxed boards, nutty toasted almonds and sesame seeds, slight minerality, salty notes, and a faint coastalness.
Palate
Great body, oily and nutty with malted barley, thick honey, and fruit. Sweet and rich with tropical fruit, dried apricots, honey, cooling eucalyptus, fresh herbs, rich dry oak, silky caramel, chocolate ganache, sugary malt, toasted sesame-seed bagel, hints of tobacco and earth, mineral, salty notes, yellow plums, and mango.
Finish
Fruity and long with great balance, cooling, a little bit greener with mango lassi, thick honey, green apple skins (a bit tannic), eucalyptus, wet grass, pine needles, coconut water, fragrant sweet flowers, and more old books.
