Description

Mothballed by previous owners Whyte & Mackay, Bruichladdich distillery was revived in the year 2000 by independent bottler Murray McDavid. For a long time the distillery was the black sheep of Islay, on account of producing unpeated whisky in order to meet its owner's blending requirements. Contrary to general expectations though, this also made it a hit with the locals who were presumably sick of peated whisky. Lochindaal is a peated variant of Bruichladdich, produced since 2007, with a peat level of around 50 ppm, and is named after a lost Islay distillery. This particular release is an independent bottling by McNeill's Choice.

Nose
Subtle nose with sea salt and peat smoke, caramelized ham with herbs and pepper crust. With water, less smoke and more dusty old bottle attic flavor. Alternatively, light fruit sweetness and acidity of gooseberries, well-integrated alcohol, fresh and fruity like white fruits, with sparkling citrus notes, raspberries, and currants. After some time, subtle sweet peat with white pepper emerges.
Palate
Sweet charcoal, then strong Islay aromas: peanuts, salt, peat, smoke. The meaty ham phenomenon leads to a sweet finish. With water, much sweeter: honey, vanilla, white fruits. Smoke, ash, peat become complementary. Alternatively, a classic ex-Bourbon sweet start that remains sweet, even with tart notes of peat, cocoa, and mocha, leaning towards milk chocolate with a slightly higher cocoa content. Peat and smoke are rather light in this Lochindaal variant. With water, more spice: herbs, coffee, cocoa, and more peat.
Finish
Vanilla, tonka bean, honey, herbs, and campfire. The beautiful, sweet smoke lingers long in the mouth on exhalation. Alternatively, sweet finish with white fruits and a slight fruit acidity, reminiscent of vanilla pudding with gooseberries and rhubarb cake. Earthy peat smoke and slight nuttiness are in the background as a spicy extra.
