Description

This Bunnahabhain 2005 Burgundy Finish is an excellent Islay single malt whisky, initially matured in refill hogsheads for 11 years, then finished for a substantial three years in French Burgundy red wine casks. Released in late 2019 (appearing on shelves in early 2020) as part of the distillery's move toward bold, high-strength wine finishes, this bottling yielded 600 bottles.

Nose
Sweet and very dark with loads of dark winey fruit, Black Forest cake, raspberry jellies, pomegranate, dried apricots, aged balsamic, and plum sauce. Strong dark-roast coffee, pumpernickel, caraway seeds, roasted almonds, black pepper, pungent earthiness, salt, and dark-chocolate-covered orange peels.
Palate
Medium-thick and very full with a tongue-coating texture. Arrives with pomegranate juice, tart berries, and more balsamic, developing into a wave of salted dark chocolate, deep earth, creamy coffee, strong charred oak, baking spice, and brown sugar.
Finish
Medium-long with blackberries, espresso roast, black pepper, earthy malt, and dunnage. Lingering dark chocolate, crème brulee, browned butter, and toasted oak.
