Nose
Expect a thick, heavy smoke with oily and creamy undertones, hints of olive oil, engine grease, and diesel. Notes of vanilla, wood, nuts, and fruit, with a dusty or waxy quality. Citrus, especially lemon, seaweed, and brine are common, along with a coastal peat character. Some detect notes of paper, cardboard, or even rhum agricole.
Palate
The palate is typically sweet on entry, with sugar water or syrup, and a fruity, sometimes hoppy bitterness. It can be big and chewy, with funky, nutty peat and a nice touch of smoke. Flavors of lemon, vanilla, and brine are often present, alongside ash, wood, and sometimes a meaty or BBQ brisket note. Some describe it as pure, precise, and surgical Caol Ila, with elements of oysters, lemon, and tar.
Finish
The finish is generally long and dry, with persistent oak, smoke, and an oily/creamy texture. Salty notes are very common, often described as saline or maritime, with hints of lemon pepper, brine, and vanilla. Peppery notes, hydrocarbons, and ash can also be present, leading to a lingering, elegant peat smoke.
