Description

In early 2011, Desiree Reid decided to pursue her dream of creating a New Zealand single malt that would stand tall on the international whisky stage. She travelled around the world for two and a half years learning from many master distillers, including the late Dave Pickerell. In 2013, she sold her farm and moved to Wanaka where she was able to find a suitable site for a distillery in Cardrona. This Cardrona Single Malt Whisky 'Growing Wings' is a 5-year-old expression, distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2021 at natural cask strength of 65.7% ABV. It was matured in an ex-Bourbon cask.

Nose
Caramel, toasted oak, warm baking spices. Rich toffee and vanilla, layered with buttery pear tarte tatin. Subtle Bourbon oak, delicate citrus nuance. Honey, orange oils and sweet lemon, butterscotch, creamy tablet and soft brown sugar, eucalyptus and a herbal note.
Palate
Layers of vanilla, honey, rich malt sweetness. Toffee-forward with vanilla-caramel and sweet, buttery pear tarte tatin. Full, velvety mouthfeel at cask strength, propelled by ex-Bourbon oak—warm spice, ripe fruit and a honeyed sweetness. Peppery and spicy with sweet caramel and fresh apple notes.
Finish
Long and smooth with lingering oak and spice. Long and luxurious, with toffee sweetness and a satin of buttery pear tarte tatin. Vanilla and Bourbon-spice emerge, adding warmth as the oak dries gracefully. Long and rich with lingering vanilla, treacle, roasted pecan, sherry spice, and dry oak.
