Description

From its Mizunara wash backs and small stills with steep lyne arms to the fact that the mashman uses a wooden paddle to stir the mash, Chichibu is a hands-on distillery with quality as an intrinsic focus. With the ground now broken on a blending room, and an off-site cooperage, Ichiro Akuto's distillery - formed from the ashes of his grandfather's Hanyu distillery - is one of the finest producers. This peated single malt was crafted at Chichibu Distillery in Japan, founded by Ichiro Akuto in 2008. The 2020 US Edition is a limited-release showcasing the distillery's smoky side, matured for 5 years in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-chibidaru, and sherry butts & hogsheads.

Fruity and sweet with cherries, caramel, peat, and a touch of cereal. Inviting aromas of orchard fruits—crisp apple and juicy pear—are followed by floral honey, vanilla bean, and faint traces of oak. Campfire smoke, citrus, and honey.
Palate
Equally fruity with dark fruit notes, vanilla, oak, mint, and a touch of spice. Sweet yet structured, with caramelized sugar, citrus zest, and warming oak spice. Malt, oak, and spice. Subtle floral notes quickly followed by orange peel, hickory smoke, rich malt, umami, coastal salinity.
Finish
Satisfyingly smooth with lingering smoke. Long and balanced, blending peat warmth with subtle sweetness. Long and satisfying, featuring toffee, charred oak, and a whisper of subtle smoke that lingers gracefully. Long finish with hickory smoke and orange peel.
