Description

A malt distillery in the Highland region of Scotland and part of the Scotch whisky holdings of Diageo. The current distillery was built in 1967 and despite its long associations to the Johnnie Walker blends, it has one of the oldest single malt brands as well. This Clynelish 1972 22 Year Old is part of the Rare Malts Selection, a historic series of single malt whiskies from operational and lost distilleries released by United Distillers (later Diageo) between 1995 and 2005. This particular bottling, distilled in 1972 and aged for 22 years, was released at a natural cask strength of 58.64% ABV and was especially released for the US market.

Nose
Punchy, with notes of cake, pastries, praline, and huge waxy notes of beehive, paraffin, and various oils. It develops smokier notes of white wood smoke and resin, followed by tropical fruits like orange zests, bananas, tangerines, and walnut liquor. Also, honey, grassy, prickly/peppery notes with ginger, lemon peel, hay, sackcloth, peach, papaya, and pineapple.
Palate
Powerful and drinkable, starting with bitter oranges, lots of wax (mastic candies), smoked tea, butterscotch, bergamot, and quince jelly. It becomes smokier with notes of old pu-erh tea, liquorice sticks, and hints of Smyrna raisins, with a slightly tannic edge. Honey and citrus are prominent, with a thick, starchy mouthfeel, lime, and pepper.
Finish
Very long, waxy, orangey, and resinous. Lingering bitter citrus peel, with spicy oak at the very end.
