Description

Made in 1981 and matured in a single sherry hogshead, this single malt Coleburn was bottled in March 2019 by Gordon & MacPhail for its Private Collection. Spirit from Coleburn Distillery, mothballed in 1985, was traditionally used in blending, making this a rare single malt.

Nose
Sherry-soaked fruit aromas with a touch of beeswax polish. Juicy black cherries drizzled with rich caramel leads into fresh coffee with a subtle smokiness. Fruity (forest fruits, blackcurrants, dark cherries), with a hint of espresso and varnish, as well as leather, walnut skins and orange marmalade.
Palate
Dark chocolate, coffee, and ripe plums. Dried fruits and sherry-soaked cherries, reminiscent of rich fruitcake. Subtle flavours of oak and liquorice emerge with a slight nuttiness. Initially drying, then becoming juicier, with spiced orange, cloves, gingerbread and dark roasted coffee beans.
Finish
Long; rich fruitcake, coffee, and toffee notes evolve into leather with a hint of smoke. Orange and gingerbread notes linger with hints of distant earthy smoke. Some soft dried red fruits and lingering spices.
