Description

This splendid old Crown Royal was part of a collection dating back to the early 1950s. Robust yet elegant, forthright yet subtle, complex yet integrated to the point of symphony, it was sheer indulgence on the palate. Although grain changes every year due to the weather, the flavor of Crown Royal Deluxe remains consistent. The skilled blenders who make this entry-level Crown Royal use their finely tuned noses, not a recipe, to ensure this.

Nose
A surprisingly complex and evolved nose for its age and proof. Initial notes of aged oak and rich caramel are prominent, followed by hints of dried dark fruits – plum and fig – mingling with a subtle, almost floral vanilla. There's a delicate spice, reminiscent of nutmeg and a touch of roasted nuts. A faint whisper of rye spice, even in a Canadian blend, adds intrigue.
Palate
The palate is remarkably smooth and elegant, a testament to the extended barrel aging. The caramel and vanilla from the nose translate beautifully, now joined by a nuanced sweetness of maple syrup and honey. The oak influence is well-integrated, providing a gentle tannic backbone without bitterness. Mid-palate, delicate notes of milk chocolate, toasted almond, and a touch of baking spice emerge. The 80 proof maintains accessibility while still delivering a satisfying depth of flavor. There's a faint, almost ethereal fruitiness – perhaps apple or pear – that peeks through.
Finish
The finish is medium in length, clean, and quite sophisticated. Sweet oak and lingering vanilla slowly fade, leaving behind a pleasant warmth of gentle spice – a touch of ginger and cinnamon. There's a final, echo of dried fruit and a whisper of that characteristic Canadian rye character, leaving the palate refreshed and eager for another sip.
