Description

Created in 1896 by Mathew Gloag, it was initially called the Grouse Blend but the 'Famous' prefix was added in 1905 after the success of the brand. Owned by the Edrington Group, it is stablemates with Highland Park and Macallan and was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1984. The blenders still work by the same four fundamentals as they always have: foundation (sticking to the Gloag family traditions); finest (keeping up the high quality); flavour (creating aroma through maturation); and fusion (perfecting the ideal blend). This 30-year-old expression is a blended malt whisky, limited to 1980 bottles worldwide, and is said to contain high quantities of Highland Park and Macallan malts. It has received awards such as the Trophy award at the International Challenge in 2007.

Nose
Thick. Rum, toffee. Dried peels sherry, nutty spice. Fruity and complex, with aromas of marmalade, cherries and chocolate bursting through instantly, and barley, toffee, tropical fruits and walnuts building slowly.
Palate
Good sweetness, Muscovado sugar, rum, figs. Fruitcake. Equally complex and a myriad of flavours developing slowly, including notes of dark chocolate, cinnamon, gingerbread, figs and red berries.
Finish
Fruity, gentle spice, medium long. Dried fruit accompanies soft wood notes as mild wood spices become more dominant and accompany a mild resurgence of the nuttiness.
