Description

In 1826 the exuberant and extroverted James Allardice, along with a consortium of local farmers, founded the distillery and began producing his "Guid GlenDronach" single malt. Unfortunately Allardice's marketing strategy of offering free drams to Edinburgh's "ladies of night", coupled with a fire at the distillery in 1837, led to him declaring bankruptcy. Nose
Rich and enticing with notes of very old Sauternes, raisins, pipe tobacco, Demerara rum, prunes, Christmas cake, cured ham, cigars, truffle, leather polish, humus, chocolate, poached fruits (pears, yellow plums), overripe mango, blood orange, passion fruit, fruit jelly, butter toffee, and faint hints of cardamom. Evolving and complex.
Palate
Powerful and hugely concentrated, spicy and dried fruity. Extremely Christmassy with chocolate, cloves, juniper berries, raisins, prunes, caraway seeds, dates, and cardamom. Strikingly fresh and heavy, with slightly sour stewed fruits, soft vanilla, milk chocolate, nuts (walnuts, almonds), and oak. Beefy.
Finish
Very long, with coffee, kirsch, and cloves. Slightly fruity but really dry with notes of walnut skin. Med-long with pineapple.
