Description

A malt distillery located in Forgue by Huntly in the eastern Highland region. As of 2016 it is American-owned by the Brown-Foreman Corporation through its Benriach Distillery Company subsidiary. Famed for its preference for sherry cask-ageing, it has long been an established single malt brand.

Nose: Rich dried fruits, dark chocolate, orange peel and warming sweet spice. Huge deep, dark sherry notes, hints of rancio, Armagnac, plum brandy and tangy damsons. Pepper and butterscotch build.
Palate: Full and rounded, with notes of raisin, toffee, cocoa, oak spice and roasted nuts. A mix of truffle oil and intense walnut notes, a coffee/caramel note develops, alongside juicy chocolate malt and port wine.
Finish: Long, warming and gently spiced, with lingering fruit and oak. Berry fruits and spice. Very, very long.

The 52.9% suits my high-proof bias, but the walnut and oak spice do more to keep the rich fruit and chocolate interesting. The long, gently spiced finish helps. Plenty going on without needing a sales pitch.
