Description
A Speyside malt distillery that is today part of the Edrington Group following its acquisition of Highland Distillers in 1999. Unusually, the distillery and its brand had different owners between 2010 and 2017 when the label was briefly sold to Berry Brothers & Rudd in London. Glenrothes 1978 Vintage was earmarked from an early stage as an ideal component in blended Scotch whiskies, and has long been a key part of big brands such as Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse. Its relationship with the former led to a three-decade-long association with London wine-merchants, Berry Brothers & Rudd, who first approached Highland Distillers about licensing the Glenrothes single malt brand. This 1978 Vintage is likely the last Glenrothes from the 1970s, crafted from a small selection of casks hand-picked by then-Malt Master, John Ramsay, at the peak of their maturity. It represents the final vinnings of the 1970s era for the distillery and is bottled in a small allocation.
