Description

Bottled in 2009, this limited release was selected by the retiring malt master, John Ramsay, after 43 years of service. The whisky is a vatting of twenty second-fill American oak sherry casks, re-racked into sherry butts. The two best casks were then vatted together. It is a unique non-vintage blend of thirty casks personally selected by John, all second fill American oak sherry casks from vintages ranging from 1973 to 1987. Each bottle of the John Ramsay Legacy limited edition is individually numbered and presented in an oak box with a hidden drawer at the base holding a booklet with tasting notes by John Ramsay. This single malt whisky offers a vibrant, deep golden hue, a testament to its careful maturation in a selection of the finest oak casks. It is un-chill filtered.

Nose
Very elegant and precise aromas with honey, vanilla, brown sugar, molasses, hazelnut, nutmeg, gorse bushes, ripe fruits, delicate floral undertones, and hints of spice. It also reveals the signature Glenrothes linseed oily nose with bracken, oily smoked mackerel, and lightly salted vanilla.
Palate
Fabulously integrated and complex, initially oily, moving to macadamia nut, then vanilla, with slight wood smoke, and ending in salty warm spices such as nutmeg. Zesty marmalade runs throughout with controlled sherry notes and balanced oak. It has a great, thick nectar-like mouthfeel with dried orange peel, licorice, a touch of cinnamon, rose petals, floral notes, juicy apples, zesty citrus, subtle nutty characteristics, and creamy sweetness. Richly malty with honeyed citrus, chocolate fudge, and nougat.
Finish
Huge and long, with oaky vanilla, warming spices, fruitcake, brandied orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and polished oak balancing the sweetness. It is smooth and satisfying, leaving traces of oak and a gentle warmth.
