Description

* A Highland malt distillery and one of the oldest in Scotland, founded in 1763. Its modern history begins in 1959 when saved from closure by James Fairlie, and it is today owned by Glenturret Holding, a joint venture between the Lalique Group and Swiss businessman, Hansjörg Wyss. Perhaps one of Scotland's most important whisky companies, Gordon & MacPhail is a historic blender, independent bottle ...

Maltiply Tasting Profile
Nose
unmistakably sherry influenced – sweet-ish sherry notes, vanilla, ripe cherries, raisins, condensed orange juice, caramel, hints of toffee, wax and just slight spices – more like ginger than European oak oriental spices. No oaky notes.
Palate
Diluted (dry-fruity) sherry with vanilla, cocoa and coffee beans, dark chocolate, sugar-free toffee (what?), grapefruit peel and highly diluted raisin syrup.
Finish
medium-long finish offers a mixture of dryness and dark fruits upon swallowing with a more pronounced chocolate note as time passes.

The sweet sherry and ripe fruit sound inviting, while the darker chocolate notes give it a drier edge. That shift from cherries and raisins to cocoa and dark fruits makes this a particularly appealing sherry-led Highland malt.

Sherry leads; the nose notes no oak, which makes the oak question moot.

The appeal here is the tension between sweet, sherry-led fruit and a drier, darker side. Ripe cherries and raisins sit alongside a slight ginger-like spice on the nose, which gives the sweetness a useful counterpoint without taking over. The palate shifts toward cocoa, coffee and dark chocolate, while the finish brings dryness and dark fruit together. That change of emphasis makes this more interesting to me than a straightforwardly sweet sherry style. The spice is only hinted at, so it sounds like a supporting detail rather than the main event.
