Description

Created in 1863 to appeal to the burgeoning blended Scotch market, Grand Macnish was heavily reliant on light, fragrant Highland malts and is one of the oldest, continuously available Scotch whisky blends in the world. Originally drawing on over 40 Highland malts, this blend became a huge success and was feted by Ernest Hemingway. This is one of the oldest running brands of blended whisky.

The lively, young nose brings lavender and heather together with brown sugar and pear. There is also a slight musty note, which gives the opening a less tidy edge. On the palate, vanilla fudge and molasses sit alongside fresh summer fruits, while light cinnamon and pepper add some contrast. That spice suits my preferences, although the watery mouthfeel may make the flavours feel less substantial than their range suggests. The finish is short, with slight oaky bitterness and vague fruitiness, but a mellow impression lingers after the main flavours fade. That lingering softness is pleasant, even if the brief finish and thin texture keep this from being a more compelling blend.

The floral notes and fresh summer fruits give this blend an inviting, easygoing character. Pear, apple and brown sugar keep the palate familiar, while the watery mouthfeel makes it seem less substantial. The finish is short, with a little oaky bitterness before a lingering mellowness. A relaxed, approachable choice on paper, though the lighter texture and brief finish may leave enthusiasts wanting more depth.
