Description

This is a 2005 bottling of Hakushu from Suntory. The translation of Furudaru Shiage means "old barrel finish," and it has been filtered through bamboo charcoal. The Hakushu distillery, the second malt distillery built by Suntory in Japan, opened in 1973. This particular expression is a pure malt vatting of whiskies from both Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries, distilled in 1991 and bottled in 2005. The distillation technique seems to have involved the direct fire method.

Palate
Honey, cinnamon, nutty, sweet, with a punchy attack of caramel, roasted nuts, huge maltiness, ginger, and candy sugar. Rich and buttery mouthfeel, with intense, astringent, peaty, bitter, and chili-like flavors.
Finish
Long, candied, burnt caramel, cereally. Very intense and long, with a spicy finish.
