Description

The largest and oldest malt whisky distillery in the Orkney archipelago, located in Kirkwall on the main island. Founded in 1798, it is today part of the holdings of the Edrington Group and its whisky is world-renowned for the unique flavour provided to it by local Orcadian peat. Nose
A lovely initial aroma that suggested a kind of 'candied' smokiness, alongside beach wood and fresher tones like foaming limpets and barnacles in a rock pool. We also noted elderflower, seaweed, clay and coastal wildflowers. Water brought some sharper notes of plum eau de vie, canvass, crisp peat smoke and citrus peels.
Palate
The neat palate opened with lovely flavours of smoked olive oil, mineral salts, turmeric, dried herbs and cough mixtures. Charismatic and classical in style.
Finish
Water brought out more Orcadian, herbal peat smoke, along with some cured meats, dried seaweed and umami paste. Superb!
