Description

The Five of Spades was distilled in 2000, the final year of production at Hanyu, and bottled in 2008. It was initially matured in a hogshead, then finished in an American oak refill sherry butt. Hanyu distillery ceased production in 2000 and was dismantled in 2004. Ichiro Akuto, grandson of the founder, salvaged the remaining stock and bottled them under the Ichiro's Malt Card Series, which has become highly sought after by collectors. This particular bottling is part of the legendary 'Card Series'.

Nose
Big, fat and buttery with masses of fudge ice cream, mint, black pastilles, dark chocolate, reed, moist earth, and sandalwood. Notes of hot-buttered toast, malt loaf, raisins, hazelnut, almond, walnut, and old seasoned wood. Sweetness with fruity aromas and marzipan.
Palate
Hot, spicy, and alcoholic warming with notes of raw ginger and kumquats. Surprisingly nutty, almond, toasty wood, and some pine sap. Water brings out sweetness.
Finish
Eucalyptus, hot chili pepper, and woody spices. Very long, pleasant, spicy, oaky, slightly sour, and dry.
