Description

The Isle of Harris distillery started in 2015 and 'The Hearach' is their first single malt whisky, named after the inhabitants of Harris in Gaelic. This Oloroso Cask Matured expression is the second permanent release in The Hearach range, crafted with 100% Scottish Concerto barley, lightly peated to 12-15 ppm, and fermented for up to five days. It is entirely matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts sourced from Bodega José y Miguel Martín in Andalusia, Spain, and bottled at 46% ABV without chill-filtration or artificial coloring.

Nose
Initial aromas of sweet orange peel, lime zest, and cranberry, followed by heathery peat smoke, ripe pear, and a hint of salty air. Notes of cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, honeycomb, and creamy white chocolate emerge, with a subtle nutty scent and machair wildflowers.
Palate
Gentle peat smoke and toasted malt lead, layered with homemade apple sauce, candied ginger, and mixed spices. Citrus notes of grapefruit, lime, and burnt orange weave through, alongside walnuts, fireside wood smoke, and a touch of herbal thyme. A smooth oiliness and sweetness develop, with hints of sea breeze, salt, salted caramel, green banana, and toasted almond.
Finish
Long and textured, with smoky wood and spices like cinnamon, vanilla pods, and subtle cloves. Lingering notes of new leather, liquorice, and a distinctive clotted-cream richness, with sea-spray and smouldering peat smoke trailing off slowly.
