Description

Too often pitched as opposite extremes on the Scotch whisky flavour spectrum, peat smoke and sweetness can actually work together remarkably well. This fact is exemplified in Sweet Peat from Johnnie Walker, which blends powerful peat and citrus flavours with sweet Speyside character and a luscious sherried note. The result is a flavour profile full of rich caramel and vanilla flavours, a light spi ...

Polished wood on the nose gives the oak side something to work with, but it seems less central once the vegetal and floral palate takes over. Coffee and chocolate recur, while the short, vegetal finish leaves that wood note feeling more like an opening detail than the main thread.

The appeal here is the link between the sweet coffee-candy and chocolate notes and the more vegetal, floral side, with violet giving the palate a distinct contrast. Fruit appears across the nose and palate, while smoke stays elusive rather than taking over. The short, vegetal finish is the main limitation for me, though its coffee, apple and cereal notes give it a clear closing character. A thoughtful, slightly unconventional blend rather than a smoke-led one.
