An Island malt whisky distillery on the remote Hebridean Isle of Jura. Despite being closed for the majority of the 20th century, its was re-opened by Charles Mackinlay & Co in the 1960s and is today part of the Alliance Global Group via its Whyte & Mackay division. Matured in American white oak ex-bourbon and hand-selected American Rye barrels, the casks deliver depth and complexity to our 14-year-old single malt with layered spice, aromatic, herbal and floral qualities.

silver.postcard10 OctThe oak char and warming wood spices sound like a clear counterpoint to the fresh citrus, blossom and tropical fruit. That contrast is appealing, though I’d want the oak to sit in support rather than take over; the notes also give plenty of space to mint, fruit and sweet, nutty flavours. The rye-cask finish is a useful part of the picture, with fragrant cinnamon and pepper adding lift alongside the softer caramel notes. It reads as a layered, balanced character, with enough oak presence to interest me without making oak the whole story.
