Description

A very special whisky from long-closed Japanese distillery Karuizawa, distilled in 1965. This impressive 50 Year Old release was aged in a solitary sherry butt before being bottled in 2017 and released in 2022. It is rich, dark, and elegant, with complex layers of fruit and spice.

Nose
Intensely rich and leathery, with notes of burnt pineapple, orange marmalade, polished aromatic woods, sweet molasses, cinnamon spice, rubber, cigar box, and a touch of burnt tar. It also presents dried plums, dark cherries, incense, tobacco, cacao, dried tropical fruits like pineapple rings, candied orange peels, dried persimmon, and sandalwood.
Palate
Thick and tongue-coating, with a broad bittersweet and slightly floral woodiness. Flavors of star anise, liquorice, herbal honey, tangerine peels, fig syrup, dried irises, lavender, dried pineapple slices, dates, eucalyptus, agarwood, cedary tones, aged cigars, game meats, dense blackcurrant, raisin, espresso, bitter chocolate, orange oil, balsamic edge, oak tannins, tea leaf, and a savoury umami quality.
Finish
Long and seemingly limitless, with lingering dried fruit and aromatic spices such as clove, sandalwood, and dusty cinnamon warmth. It also features a mineral, earthy note, leather, tobacco, dried longans, soft smoked floral notes (without peatiness), espresso, wet stone, and slate.
