Description

Kilchoman, which came online in 2005, was the first distillery to be built on Islay for 124 years. This 100% Islay Inaugural Release Cask Strength is a 3-year-old single malt, representing the first Single Farm Single Malt Islay whisky in over 100 years, with all stages from barley growing to bottling completed at the distillery. It was distilled in 2008, bottled in 2011 at 61.3% ABV, and matured in 1st Fill Bourbon Barrels from casks 100-103/08. Nose
Early notes of pears in syrup, lemon curd and dry, ashy peat smoke are joined by under-ripe pear notes and more pungent, oily peat. Lesser notes of tobacco leaf, vanilla bean and a nice chocolate phosphate. A lemony sweetness hovers over it all.
Palate
Tinned pears and sweet lemon are joined by a nice chocolate-nut spread maltiness, which is in turn joined by the dry, slightly woody, ashy peat and smoke. Towards the end just a bit of tannic spicy wood emerges with a bit of pepper and ginger. The palate has a remarkable consistency, that sweet citrusy quality rolls along throughout, being joined along the way by the peat, smoke and wood.
Finish
Sweet citrus, dry ashy peat smoke, vanilla bean, a bit of white pepper and an even smaller kiss of pickled ginger as it fades away.
