Description

Originally based in Aberdeen before being bought by the Campbeltown based Mitchell family in 1969, Wm Cadenhead's is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland. Now their flagship Campbeltown premises - located next to the Springbank distillery - also features their own shop offering a variety of bottled spirits from different distilleries. This Kilkerran 14 Year Old was distilled in 2009 and bottled in Winter 2023, fully matured in a bourbon hogshead, and is part of Cadenhead's Authentic Collection. It is one of only 234 bottles.

The contrast between the savoury nose and sweeter palate appeals to me here. Soft peat and smoked ham give the opening its direction, while puff pastry adds a different note without displacing them. Honeycomb and cream soda then shift the emphasis, with nutmeg keeping the palate from resting entirely on sweetness. The finish changes course again, placing honeydew melon alongside liquorice and aniseed. I like that the flavours do not all point the same way, yet the move from smoke to sweetness is easy to follow. The liquorice and aniseed make the finish a more particular preference for me than the palate, but that turn is also part of what makes this character interesting.
