Description

This is a 5-year-old sourced single malt Irish whiskey from Killowen Distillery, part of their "Signature Rum & Raisin" series. The whiskey was initially matured in ex-bourbon casks for five years, then finished in Killowen's own dark rum casks and Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry butts. It is bottled at cask strength of 55% ABV, is non-chill filtered, and has no added coloring. This Batch #1 release consisted of 660 bottles.

Fruity and inviting, with notes of fresh apple juice, blackstrap molasses, warm Christmas pudding, banana custard, demerara sugar, golden raisins, and a hint of oxidized sherry. Some detect tropical fruits, coconut, vanilla, and a touch of smokiness like burnt grass.
Palate
Sweet and juicy, with a rich and syrupy mouthfeel. Flavors include large green apples, dark sugar, dried fruits like raisins, sultanas, figs, and prunes. There are also notes of cinnamon raisin compote, fig and wine reduction, chili powder, cardamom, coconut, vanilla, and a background of dark rum. Some find it warming and a bit prickly.
Finish
Medium to short, with notes of caramelized demerara sugar, toffee apple, red apples, ground almonds, and Christmas cake. Some detect cardamom, chili, bananas foster, fresh vanilla bean, orange peel, and a lingering tropical fruit.
