Description

Like most Islay malts, Lagavulin is definitely not for the faint hearted. The distillery was officially founded in 1816 (although illicit production on the site most certainly predates that), and produces malt with a signature style of earthy smoke and savoury undertones. This Lagavulin 12 Year Old 2020 Special Release is a powerful and assertive Islay single malt, bottled at a cask strength of 56.4% ABV. Matured for 12 years in traditional refill American oak casks, it offers a fresh take on the distillery's classic character, leaning into the sweeter aspects of Lagavulin's spirit. It is part of Diageo's annual Special Releases series and is a limited edition bottling. The whisky is non-chill filtered and naturally colored.

Nose
A big wave of brine, olive oil, salted lemons, pear drops, tar, green peppercorns, dried hay, seaweed, sweet malt, garden mint, almonds, and smokiness.
Palate
Surprisingly sweet with icing sugar, fresh pears, lychees, earthy peat, iodine, lemon peel, malt, brine, anchovies, white pepper, chilli heat, oak, marzipan, orange oil, sweet ash, charred oak, cracked black pepper, and subtle honeyed sweetness.
Finish
Medium to exceptionally long with a warming spice heat, salted lemons, drying ashiness, bonfire embers, sea spray, and a touch of herbal liquorice.
