Description

Like most Islay malts, Lagavulin is definitely not for the faint hearted. The distillery was officially founded in 1816 (although illicit production on the site most certainly predates that), and produces malt with a signature style of earthy smoke and savoury undertones. 1962 marked a significant point in the distillery's history, as it was then bought by John Logan Mackie, whose nephew Peter wen ...

Maltiply Tasting Profile
Nose
Aroma is very pleasant, with berries, Lapsang Souchong tea, sherry, sweet seaweed, wax polish, camphor, carbolic and scented smoke. Earthy and mossy peat smoke mingles with caramel, dried fruits (candied orange and raisin), toffee, dried apricot, mown grass, green apple flesh, a hint of acetone, and old spice box (clove and white pepper). A much tighter, cleaner, briny expression with paraffin, lamp oil, plasticine, oysters, salty manzanilla, tarry ropes, fresh butter, engine oil, and new plastics. Splendid passion fruits on a perfect peat.
Palate
Bold and expressive, with an initial full-on, ashy peat smoke and a hint of damp earth and moss. Very sweet to start, followed by an explosion of flavors. Dried fruit notes develop, including raisin, sultana, candied orange, date, and fig. A big pinch of baking and oak spices add depth (clove, cinnamon stick, all-spice, white pepper). Citrus, zests, bark, smoked fish, oysters, kippers, drops of citron liqueur and limoncello, some oiliness, a touch of horseradish, and stewed parsnips. Old-school, rounder, complex, with seashells.
Finish
Surprisingly long and warming, with a big blast of peat smoke and a long aftertaste. Sweetness and dried fruits slowly fade, but peat smoke and baking/oak spices linger, creating a pleasant dryness. Long, salty, briny, totally coastal, with some coal tar. Full-bodied.
