Description

Like most Islay malts, Lagavulin is definitely not for the faint hearted. Nose
Fresh, breezy, with seaweed and shellfish. Peat smoke with herbal, aromatic notes of lemon thyme and lilac. Intense sweetness, prickly smoke, savoury green earthy notes. Deeply sooty, medicinal, coastal, with shells on a beach, putty, and earthy notes. Gentle lemon, light ashy smoke, sea air, seaweed, rubber, diesel fumes, and damp earth. Mulchy leaves, meaty peat smoke, ash, mineral-laden smokiness, coal stoves, sweet peat, and mint. Oily, peaty, coastal, with thick brine, salted butter, dried sweet herbs, aniseed, dried sweet lemon, fresh salty oysters, spearmint, vegetal, ashy peat, dirty engine oil, and diesel fuel.
Palate
Oily and enthralling, with bags of peat smoke and a wonderful saltiness, then roasted lemons and candied pineapple. Rich and sweet, with a burst of liquorice supplanted by greener notes, growing sweetness of golden syrup, infused with sweet and spicy smoke. Big peat with pepper and lemon, smoked fish, leathery notes, ashes, wax, and salted caramel. Medicinal and very coastal. Exploding peat with iodine, lemon, damp earth, driftwood, diesel fumes, and a sharp peppery prickle. Salted peanuts, green leaves, clouds of sweet peat smoke, coal dust, char, sharp apple, lemon, and a touch of ash. Big dry, ashy, spicy peat, aniseed, sweet cigar ash, brine, fresh sweet shellfish, subtle sweetness like salted light toffee, and seafood sweetness.
Finish
Long bitter-sweet, laced with charred lemons and cacao, powerfully smoky. Medium length with a sweet smoke lingering on. Very long, ashy, lemony, with perfect sharpness. Long, peppery heat, lemon, sweet medicinal peat, brine, and malt. Citrusy smoke fades to coal dust. Liquorice and black pepper remain. Long and warming, becoming quite soft, with ashy and spicy peat, aniseed, liquorice root, diesel fuel, and dirty engine oil.
