Description

An Islay malt distillery that is located between Laphroaig and Ardbeg on the south-east coast. One of two Islay distilleries in the Diageo portfolio, it is the island's representative in the Classic Malts of Scotland collection and its classic 16-year-old is one of the world's best-loved whiskies. This Lagavulin 1980 Distillers Edition is a special limited release, double matured and finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bottled in 1999.

Nose: Rich and fruity with intense peat, salty sea breeze, rum-soaked raisins, citrus zest, vanilla, seaweed, and hints of chocolate, earth, and leather with plums.
Palate: Thick and chewy, with notes of tropical fruits, peat, salted chocolate, seaweed, citrus zest, blackberry, damp earth, musty bookshelves, wet leather, caramel, coconut, and nuts. Sweet and luscious with a salty tang.
Finish: Deep and smoky with hints of peat, black pepper, sea spray, salt, and long-lasting oak. Engaging and enjoyable with a maritime character.

There’s a compelling balance here between intense peat and the sweeter, darker fruit notes: rum-soaked raisins and plums meet salted chocolate and a salty sea breeze. The Pedro Ximénez sherry cask is a fitting detail alongside that rich fruit character, while the finish stays firmly smoky and maritime. It sounds more assertive than easygoing, but the sweet-and-salty contrast gives the whisky a clear point of approach.
