Description

Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by two brothers from the unassuming Johnston family on the south coast of Islay. Named after the location that the distillery itself was created upon, the name loosely translates to the 'broad hollow by the bay'. In 1994 the Prince of Wales awarded it the Royal Warrant, an accolade attested to no other whisky on earth. This special bottling was filled in 1994 by apprentice distiller John Campbell and bottled 12 years later in 2006 for the Feis Ile festival, commemorating his 12 years of service as the first Islay-born Laphroaig distillery manager.

Nose
Lemon syllabub and antiseptic mouthwash. Ash, in the grate of a dead fire. Blackcurrant and aniseed. A little limey sourness with water, lemon pepper and maybe coriander. Barbeque sauce and coriander. A rather fruit-driven Laphroaig, a little menthol, a hint of anise, some green notes (grass/herbs). The smokiness lurks in the background, with ripe red apples, apple juice, and after a while, licorice/anise.
Palate
Oily, ashy and peppery. Powerful and spicy. Good smokiness, good harmony of spice and sweetness. Quite austere and dry at first but opens up the aftertaste to a fruity smoke carpet with notes of damp cellar. Apple notes play along in the background.
Finish
Drying and peppery. Very long finish, peaty, peppery, fruity and well-balanced.
