Description
This Laphroaig, released from the distillery, celebrates 44 loyal years of service from William Campbell, or Windy, as he is more locally known. From cask no. 59, this was personally selected by distillery manager Barry MacAffer. Initially matured in a bourbon cask, this liquid was then transferred into a charred Virgin French Oak for its last 6 years maturation. Thoughtfully bottled on the 16th April 2023, this was Windy's start date back in 1979, and he will be retiring from making Islay's most richly flavoured whisky this summer. Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by two brothers from the unassuming Johnston family on the south coast of Islay. Named after the location that the distillery itself was created upon, the name loosely translates to the 'broad hollow by the bay'. In 1994 the Prince of Wales awarded it the Royal Warrant, an accolade attested to no other whisky on earth. Rumour has it that it's the Kings most favoured whisky.
